Media Design and Communications

How do we communicate today?

Along with reading and writing, the communications of today goes from the spoken and written to the expanding areas we cover in this course that includes creation, presentation and interaction with our audiences.

In this class we will add to your communications skills Blogging, Web Design, Document layout, Video capture and editing and Animation. We will look at Wiki's and live camera work as we progress with the current communcations technologies of our times. While you will find reading and writing in all of these areas we need to continuiously extend to consider ourselves literate in the media rich modern world.

Introductory High School classes are generally listed COM 10__, intermediate COM 20__ and senior classes COM 30__. The courses build from introduction through advanced course to build skills with choice. Students need a minimum of 10 CTS credits in High school and may require senior credits in their grade 12 year. These courses may require prerequsites and planning is expected between students and counselling staff.

The table below will help you see the expected courses or prerequisites from introduction to intermediate and advanced classes.

Each Student Class is setup with in the pathways to achieve 3 individual course credits. As noted below all students will start with the Visual Composition, and Graphic Tools for the first term. Choice of the third : Animation, Video and Printing options are available.

A 4th credit for the end of the term has been done by students who plan and complete work with in the class or in conjuction with school events. Planning and self focused effort is key.

Students are given the opportunity to customize their course to their skills and interests but are also responsible to work safely and complete modules in each class.

Late assignments will be penalized as would be the case in the Careers we are exploring. Incomplete courses will receive a failing grade as specified in the Alberta Education guidelines.

The table below you will make important choices that will directly affect your success in the class including credits you will earn. More importantly you will decide how you spend your time and effort. Choose well.

Organizing for your Success

All Grade 10 courses listed below begin with Visual Composition prerequisite to all other modules. All modules include Lab and Work Safety, Career Exploration, Community Standards and Cooperation Skills.

Safe working conditions allow for standards which allow for cooperation and ability to build to more intermediate and senior modules.

Likewise standards in file formats allow transfer of information between programs. These also allow use of materials from one class to the next.

Each module is marked seperately and each completed module will earn 1 credit. Access to some modules is limited by the safe limits of the facility so planning and steady effort is key to success.
